    Named after the 19th century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott, the prestigious Caldecott Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

    The Academy of Art University Library has each of the 81 Caldecott Medal-winning books, spanning the entire history that the award has been in existence since 1938. In a joint effort between the library and the School of Illustration (ILL), 40 of these titles have been on display recently in two separate exhibits—20 at 540 Powell, in the lobby across from the campus host desk, and 20 at the entrance of the library at 180 New Montgomery.

    A New Home for Young & Hungry

    Young & Hungry, the student-run advertising agency you can take as a class, has a new dedicated space in the Cannery Building at Fisherman’s Wharf. 

    Y&H, as it’s affectionately known by students who take the class, is modeled after a modern advertising agency and students work with real clients, with real deadlines. “Students often comment that it’s more like going to work than it is going to school,” said School of Advertising Associate Director and Executive Creative Director of Y&H Jim Wojtowicz. “Which is great, because that means there is an added level of learning happening that goes beyond a normal class.”

    Winning Big in the Big Apple

    Ian Blackley only had 24 hours in New York City and his intent was to make the most of it. Or at least try to. 

    The Academy of Art University School of Advertising (ADV) B.F.A. student found himself in the Big Apple for the Radio Mercury Awards, a Radio Advertising Bureau event that recognizes excellence in radio advertising. Going into NYC, Blackley’s Tropicana radio spot, I Am A Mouth, was just a nominee for the Student Produced category; by the end of his trip, it walked out as the winner.

    In Memoriam: Jim Ales

    On April 20, veteran designer and luminary Jim Ales passed away unexpectedly. Ales was bestowed an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Academy of Art University and was selected to be an American Institute of Graphic Arts Fellow in 2015.

    Awards Ceremony Honors 2018 IND Edwin T. Meyer Scholarship Winners

    On the evening of April 12, a group of Academy of Art University faculty, students and guests gathered among the gleaming vintage cars at the school’s automobile museum. They were there for an awards ceremony to announce the winner of a design competition for a $10,000 Edwin T. Meyer Scholarship. The five finalists included School of Industrial Design (IND) automotive students Max Benon, Kevin Chen, Mitchell Galik, Joshua Reese and Arindra Singh. It was the fourth year in a row that IND students participated in the competition. The scholarships are made possible thanks to a charitable trust established in memory of hot rod pioneer Edwin T. (Bud) Meyer by his long-time attorney and trustee, Mark Eskander.

    NAAB Visits the School of Architecture

    The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) recently returned to Academy of Art University to assess the School of Architecture’s B. Arch program for continuing accreditation, an important procedure for American architecture schools participating in the NCARB licensure process.
